Claims Representatives must initially determine whether a customer's insurance policy provides coverage for the loss or damage that has occurred. If there is coverage, the Claims Representative investigates the claim, negotiates the settlement, and authorizes payment to the claimant. This career combines a broad background in various kinds of damages or losses, with an in-depth understanding of insurance.
Customer Service
Customer Service is dedicated to providing each customer with an exceptional experience.  As a front-line department, Customer Service answers questions revolving around accounts, claims, payments, policies, underwriting, and Corporate websites.  
Data & Analytics

Data & Analytics assists the organization in effectively using data to drive business performance. Data analysts combine business knowledge with analytical techniques to conduct data discovery, extract insights, create powerful visuals, develop models, and effectively communicate findings to better understand the business and implement appropriate actions. The team works with functions across the organization – claims, underwriting, finance, product development, marketing, sales, and customer service - to identify opportunities to leverage the use of data as a valuable corporate asset.


Finance provides critical support in accounting, policyholder account management, business continuity, corporate risk management, fiscal planning, and statistical analysis. The Finance team monitors financial performance, provides rate indications for core products, coordinates rate reviews with underwriting, manages filings, evaluates Corporate reserve adequacy, performs financial projections, and analyzes reinsurance results to aid in contract negotiations.  

Government Affairs

Government Affairs provides state and federal regulatory guidance for Preferred’s operating territories.  The department proactively reviews legislation and Insurance Department regulations to enhance decision making.  These professionals also monitor all formal complaints and oversee Preferred’s residual markets.

Human Resources

Human Resources professionals are responsible for Preferred’s programs and policies that support the Company’s most valuable asset – its people. Functional areas of HR include employment, compensation, benefits, performance management, employee relations, recruitment and retention, and legal compliance. 

Information Technology
Computer-based technologies have generated a need for skilled, highly trained workers to design and develop hardware and software systems and to incorporate these advances into new and existing systems. This team is responsible for both mainframe and personal computer networks. The department also includes the Project Management Office, responsible for project oversight, quality assurance and business analysis.  Career opportunities exist in programming, operations, and application development, as well as project management and business analysis. 
Internal Audit

Internal Audit is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve the Company’s operations.  The group performs audits based on an audit plan approved by the Audit and Risk Committee of the Board of Directors and reports results directly to the Committee and senior management.

Marketing Communications & Research
Marketing Communications & Research identifies customer and market needs, promotes Preferred Mutual internally and externally, creates opportunities to attract key audiences, and turns awareness into brand preference.  This career includes implementation of brand messages to employees, agent partners, policyholder customers, prospects and community partners via advertising, website, direct marketing, public relations, special events, charitable giving and sponsorships.
Project Management Office
The Project Management Office (PMO) sets the corporate strategy for project management and provides leadership in establishing a project-centric culture within the organization. The PMO acts as an integral stakeholder and key decision maker to keep projects and programs consistent with strategic objectives and is involved in the selection, management, and deployment of enterprise project resources. Team members drive to bring consistency, predictability and efficiency to the organization’s project delivery capability through the development and deployment of standards and an advanced project methodology. Careers in the PMO include Project Managers and Business Analysts. 
Sales & Distribution
Sales & Distribution is responsible for all aspects of agency management and agency planning to develop and maintain an agency plant capable of achieving territory financial plans. Field Agency Managers are responsible for all new agency appointments, leading the annual agency review processes, planning, segmentation, and production improvement plans. Field Agency Specialists collaborate with the Field Agency Manager to create a team focused on territorial distribution performance. 
Site Support Services

Site Support Services include timely, accurate processing of policies and assisting coworkers. Career areas include underwriting support, mail, facilities, food service and other support functions. 

Underwriters establish a partnering relationship with Preferred's independent agent customers to develop a profitable, growing book of business. They determine the acceptability of insurance risks based on company guidelines and marketing direction, evaluate information, determine a price, and make sure the risk is properly classified. Today’s underwriter must have a blend of marketing skills, analytical ability and underwriting knowledge to be successful.
