Join us as we reveal these amazing stories. This week Lisa Worrell, Claims Support Representative, shares her Preferred story with us.
Q: How did you come about working for Preferred Mutual?
A: My significant other was hired for a Project Manager position at Preferred Mutual and so we made the move from Connecticut to Central New York. Finding it such a great place to work, he encouraged me to seek employment at Preferred. A position opened for a Commercial Lines Rate Technician, so I applied and happily received it! I have been with Preferred Mutual for a year and a half, and I recently made the move to Claims and now work as a Claims Support Representative.
Q: You mentioned you recently moved into to a new position in Claims at Preferred Mutual. What excites you about Claims?
A: I am really enjoying Claims! I love the fact that I am able to assist a great team in providing excellent customer service. We help policyholders, oftentimes at the most difficult times of their lives, and I can see the impact great customer service makes. I also enjoy that every claim is different — it keeps things interesting.
Q: Why do you think Preferred Mutual is a great place to work?
A: When I came to Preferred Mutual I had absolutely no background in insurance. I love that Preferred Mutual offers the opportunity to learn through the Institutes and receive designations and recognition for what you worked hard to learn. Preferred Mutual is all about furthering your education, bettering yourself as a person and becoming more knowledgeable so you can advance within the company. I’m proud to say, with the help of Preferred Mutual’s education programs, I am currently seeking my Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management and Economics through SUNY Empire State College.
Q: What surprised you the most when you first started working at Preferred?
A: One of the things that stood out to me most was just how much Preferred puts their employees first. For example, I have never worked for a company where the employees actually have a voice on how to have better days at work. Everyone that I have come across has been so warm and welcoming. At other companies, it isn’t for senior leadership to just stop you and say hello, have a good day or ask how you are today. I am truly humbled to work for such a great company and spend my days with genuine good people. My employment here has been an amazing experience.
Q: Do you volunteer or are you involved in any charity events?
A: I participate in the Autism Speaks program. I also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house this year with other members of the Claims Department. It was an exceptional experience and felt wonderful to give back to people in need.
Q: What is a hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?
A: I enjoy cooking, gardening, painting, hiking, and going on motorcycle trips, as well as spending time with family, friends and our two little fur babies, Hilde and Gerda.
Q: Do you currently or have you previously had a mentor or someone that has influenced you in your career?
A: I would have to say that my significant other has been my greatest influencer and mentor. He has always encouraged me to follow my dreams and goals. He has taught me that hard work really does pay off and that it pays to be patient — good things will come with time!
Q: Do you have a favorite quote and/or influential person or leader that inspires you?
A: “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” —George Eliot
Q: What might someone be surprised to know about you?
A: That I am a mother of three children all in their 20’s and that I am a grandmother to the sweetest little girl I know.
