Q: How did you become interested in Preferred Mutual?

A: Two reasons really — for many years, I have looked-up to one of the best leaders that I’ve had the fortune of working for. I have learned so much from him, both professionally and personally. I became interested in Preferred Mutual when he began working here, and I basically followed him from a prior employer (I figured that he must have known something that I didn’t at the time). Secondly, when I learned more about the Field Production Underwriter concept that Preferred Mutual had to offer, I really felt that it was the perfect opportunity for me.

Q: What has been your career path at Preferred Mutual?

A: I joined Preferred in January 2014 as a Commercial Lines Field Production Underwriter and have been doing that ever since. I really enjoy interacting with and writing new business with agents.

Q: When did you first realize that you wanted to have a career in Underwriting? What do you like about being a CL Field Production Underwriter?

A: I got into underwriting back in the 80’s and I have always liked the fact that no two risks are the same. I also appreciate that I get to work so closely with my agents. I treasure the relationships that I’ve built with them over the years, and I value that we work as partners towards common goals.

Q: Why do you think Preferred Mutual is a great place to work?

A: The employees! Everyone is very friendly and always willing to help. It was an instant feeling of belonging for me. I think the caliber of our employees is a great reason that Preferred Mutual stands out in the marketplace.

Q: Do you volunteer or are you involved in any charity events?

A: I acted as a Co-Chair for registration and rode in the CNY Ride for Missing Children for a number of years. We rode our bicycles in an annual 100-mile ride to help raise awareness toward missing and exploited children in this country. I also rode in the Brody’s Buddy Ride to help raise awareness of Downs Syndrome.

Q: Do you currently or have you previously had a mentor or someone that has influenced you in your career? If so, who and why?

A: My parents have always been the biggest influence on me. Early on, they taught me what work ethic really means, why it’s important, and how it will help you succeed in your career and in life in general.

Q: What is a hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?

A: In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family and friends, camping together and flying ultralight aircraft. My wife and I have three beautiful children, and although it’s sad to see them grow so fast, it is an unbelievable thrill to see them reach goals and succeed!

Q: Do you have a favorite quote and/or influential person or leader that inspires you?

A: A flight instructor that I had years ago inspired me. Every person he knew, was his best friend (he had no one-single “best” friend). He gave me a whole new perspective on friendships, how unique our flying craft is and to “pass it on." In other words, pass along all of the knowledge that he shared with me to others (that’s the only thing you owed him). Simply put, every friend should be your best friend and it’s not always about the money!

Q: What might someone be surprised to know about you?

A: I am a Private Pilot and enjoy flying Ultralight Aircraft. Ever since I was little, I’ve enjoyed building/flying model airplanes and in the past 11 years, I took it to the next level. Eleven years ago, I began taking ground school, flight instructions and obtained my Student Pilot rating in a Piper Cherokee airplane. Now, I spend my spare time flying Ultralight Aircraft from an airstrip on my property.
