Q: How did you become interested in working at Preferred Mutual?

A: I was looking for a change from my previous role that included not only design, but also public relations, event planning, marketing and communications. Preferred Mutual had an opening and I applied! I also loved that it was located near where I live and offered a great benefits package. Fast forward and I’ve been here for almost 12 years now!

Q: When did you first realize that you wanted to have a career in Marketing and Communications?

A: I have always been an artist and designer, which is a form of communication in itself. That allows me to help create pieces that illustrate our products with meaning and purpose. I discovered that I enjoy interacting with people and I like a challenge, whether it be pulling off an event for 300+ people or creating a series of infographics that talk about our successes. I thrive on the variety of projects that come my way and coming up with creative solutions for each.

Q: What do you want people to know about the Corporate Communications Department?

A: I would like people to know that I work with the BEST team. They each bring something special to the table and we would not be as successful as we are without each of them.

Q: Why do you think Preferred Mutual is a great place to work?

A: The people at Preferred Mutual are the heart and soul of the company. Their passion and commitment in making us successful is inspiring and encourages me to bring my 'A' game every day.

I also love how Preferred Mutual supports our involvement in the community and charitable organizations. I don’t think people realize how many groups Preferred Mutual supports either with funds or with volunteers! We are a giving culture and Preferred Mutual not only supports that, but cultivates that in many ways.

Q: What surprised you the most when you first started working at Preferred Mutual?

A: How big the company was! I was also surprised to learn about insurance and what a different language it is. I think insurance can get confusing to normal folks, so to learn what it all meant so we can better communicate it was eye opening!

Q: Do you volunteer or are you involved in any charity events?

A: I am on the Preferred Mutual Walk Assured team (Relay for Life), I serve as Vice President of the Norwich Business Improvement District, I am a committee member on the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Festival of Trees Gala, and most recently I joined as a board member for Commerce Chenango.

Q: What’s the best career advice or tip that you’ve received?

A: Be your own advocate. Do not wait for someone to speak up for you, you must know your worth and advocate for yourself.

Q: Do you currently or have you previously had a mentor or someone that has influenced you in your career? If so, who and why?

A: I take lessons and information from everyone I meet. Here are a few I would mention:

  • Develop relationships — with co-workers, vendors, business partners. These can help you succeed!
  • Say “sure” even if you are unsure — sometimes pushing yourself out of your comfort zone will help you grow.
  • It is OK to ask for help — and own up to your errors.

Q: What is a hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?

A: I enjoy reading, cooking, shopping and spending time with husband and five-year old son.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote and/or influential person or leader that inspires you?

A: “You can tell how smart people are by what they laugh at.” — Tina Fey

Q: What might someone be surprised to know about you?

A: That I can sing and used to act on stage. I haven’t done a show in a long time, but I loved doing musicals!
