Preferred Mutual encourages you to take precautions to avoid costly, and potentially deadly, impaired driving this holiday season.

Did you know that two of the most celebrated dates in December are among the most dangerous, too? At Preferred Mutual, we would like to remind you that every single death caused by impaired driving is 100 percent preventable.

While December is still considered the most wonderful time of the year for many, it also comes with some staggering statistics regarding impaired driving accidents. Motor vehicle crashes involving impaired drivers increase nearly 50% between December 24 and December 31, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On average, there are nearly 100 deaths a day during this holiday period. These staggering statistics during the holidays are scary, but the tragedy of these deaths is felt year-round.

The pain caused by one person’s choice to drive impaired is often permanent, so here are some sobering facts, as well as ways to help keep your holidays merry and bright.

Make Alternate Travel Arrangements If Drinking

Take personal responsibility this holiday season by making a plan for a safe ride home before your celebrations begin. Make smart choices and plan out how you’re going to get home safely by:

  • Designating a sober driver
  • Plan to use public transportation
  • Ride-share services, such as Uber or Lyft
  • Local taxi services

Like drunk driving, drug-impaired driving is also illegal in all 50 states. Whether the drug is obtained legally or illegally, drug-impaired driving can be deadly for everyone on the road.

Keep Yourself and Friends Safe

If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement immediately. Doing so could save the life of the driver, any passengers, and other vehicles on the road. If you have a friend who is about to drive impaired, take their keys away, and help them make arrangements to get home safely – it will be the greatest gift you ever give them.

Give the Gift of Sober Driving

Help Preferred Mutual spread the word that impaired driving is more than just a bad choice – it is deadly and illegal. Studies also show that seat belts, when properly used, are 45% effective in preventing fatalities, so be sure everyone in the vehicle buckles up to help protect you and your loved ones from an impaired driver on the road.
