During this second week of National Preparedness Month, it’s time to build or update your kit!

At Preferred Mutual, we recognize the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Make a plan and protect the ones you love with these preparedness tips!

At the time disaster strikes, your family may not be together, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area, and then prepare accordingly! Whether you need to shelter in place after an emergency or evacuate, having on hand what you need to survive for several days is critical.

During this second week of National Preparedness Month, it’s time to build or update your kit!

Things to keep in mind: 

  • Create or update your emergency supplies with this list
  • Make sure your emergency kit is ready to go in case you need evacuate. Include:
    • Enough food and water to last several days.
    • Medication, face masks and disinfectant for everyone in your household.
    • Pet supplies.
    • When building a kit, people with disabilities should consider the items they use daily, as well as life-sustaining items.
    • Have medication for at least three days in your emergency supplies.
    • Check the expiration date on your emergency supplies, and replace any old items.
    • Get the kids involved in building their own emergency kit.

    • Include your child’s favorite stuffed animals, board games, books or music in their emergency kit to comfort them in a disaster.

To ensure you are covered, be sure to work with your insurance agent to update your insurance policy with any new purchases, renovations, increases in property value, or increases in cost to rebuild or replace items.
