In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, Preferred Mutual Insurance Company reached out to Unadilla Valley Elementary School to help celebrate this year’s fire safety theme: Preventing Kitchen Fires. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, cooking was the leading cause of all residential building fires and injuries between 2008 and 2010, accounting for an estimated 164,500 fires each year.

As a property and casualty insurance provider, Preferred Mutual has a genuine interest in avoiding catastrophes, including residential fires. Education is the best tool for preventing fires and preparing children for any emergency situations.

In addition to distributing lesson plans, activity sheets, and fire safety materials, the mutual insurance company also hosted a fire safety poster contest at Unadilla Valley Elementary School.  Students in grades 1-5 were asked to draw a poster relating to the “Preventing Kitchen Fires” theme. Posters were then judged by a Preferred Mutual committee, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners were awarded a cash prize, ribbon, and certificate. Winning posters will also be displayed at the New Berlin Fire Department.

Preferred Mutual Insurance Company provides property and casualty insurance coverage to more than 235,000 individual and business customers through a network of more than 450 independent agents throughout New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The mutual insurance company, in business since 1896, employs more than 260 employees and is headquartered in New Berlin, New York. The company is rated “A” for excellent through A.M. Best.
